Much valuable time had been lost. The countrywas rough with foothills and small ravines or arroyos, making frequent halts neces-sary, so that it was nearly dark before the command was fairly straightened out andready to go into bivouac. The absent squadron was sent for, and under the shadowof a line of abrupt hills, scarcely 100 yards from the stream, the command camped.The horses were staked out and the men were allowed to make small fires. Themissing squadron came in after dark, and, not finding much room, crowded up prettyclose to the rear company, the horses being huddled upon their grazing ground. Itwas a long picket, with the line of small bluffs or hills close to camp on one sideand the treacherous quicksand stream on the other; an excellent camp—providedthere were no Indians about.

As the fire was imme-diately returned the flashes of carbines and pistols showed, at intervals, that theridge which skirted the entire camp was alive with Indians, riding and yelling likeso many demons. The cry rang out above the tumult: Every man to his lariat!Stand by your horses! Pandemonium reigned for a few moments. At every flashthe horses and mules, about 600 in number, could be seen rearing, jumping, snortingand running, with a strength that terror and brute frenzy alone could inspire, whileropes could be heard snap like the cracking reports of pistols.
