Scout Cody, known as a crack shot, coolly picked off the Indians one by one asthey came within the range of his rifle. Some of the braves, more daring than theothers, threw themselves over the necks of their horses, thus shielding themselvesbehind the bodies of the animals, and ventured closer to the circle. A well-directedbullet paid them for their daring. This manner of fighting was continued for sometime, the Indians being held at bay in spite of their superiority of numbers. Lieutenant Babcock remained steadfastly on horseback in his dangerously con-spicuous position and refused to yield to the urgent pleas of his men not to exposehimself in such manner. His horse was shot and felljust as a large body of cavalrymen sent in all haste by General Carr, who had heardthe firing, came to his rescue. Upon arrival of the re-enforcements the Indians desisted from their attack andreluctantly left the small detachment, the members of which they had counted onas their prey. They retired before the new arrivals and disappeared behind themany small hills of the prairie. Lieutenant Babcocks coolness and presence of mind had saved the day andaverted what would unquestionably have turned out to be a disaster.
