had to go back no matter how great the danger. The thought that our discovery of a passable trail was of great importanceinspired us with courage and hastened our return. The six miles back from the top of the hill was about the most uncomfortablesix miles I ever made in my life, and when we arrived within about a hundred yardsof the place where we first stopped old Cap halted and gave us the following orders: He was to take the lead and Cubberly and I were to follow. But we were first toturn our animals loose and drive them down to him, so that he could lead them offas they reached the bottom of the hill. Cap started, but the Indians did not molest him. Cubberly and I, however, had not proceeded more than 150 yards, when theredskins suddenly appeared and with a whoop and yell opened up on us. We con-tinued on our retreat, but also made our Spencer carbines talk. How we did fire ! The Apaches, too, were furious and sent arrows and bulletsafter us, till we were in a shower of missiles.

WE MADE OUR SPENCER CARBINES TALK. — 145 — We managed to reach the bottom of the hill without injury, and after crossingthe canyon to the other side knew that we were safe from further attacks. We haltedto make an inventory. Cubberlys mule was shot through the nostrils, my horsewas wounded along the tail, the bullet passing clean through the intestines. Caphad a lock of hair cut off his forehead as nicely as though it had been done with apair of scissors. His forearm was also slightly injured. There is no doubt but what we would have been killed had we taken to our heelsand simply ran, and that only by keeping up a hot fire we held the Indians at bay. Privates Aston and Cubberly were both rewarded with the Medal of Honor forthe valuable information which enabled the troops to follow the Indians with theirwagon train after the encounter. From this time on to the end of October troops B and L were constantly engagedin encounters with the Indians, but the principal work was done and
