Description |
English: Painting; triptych with square frames for the side panels and middle panel within a square frame. The panel in the centre of the triptych depicts the temptation of Saint Anthony. Anthony (with his associated item the boar next to him) is seated in front of a landscape fenced with a group of trees on the left. On the right a narrow bridge leads to the background, which is bordered by a hill, in front of which stands a small, burning church. White clouds are floating in the blue-green sky. A tree placed to the left of the centre adds a vertical aspect to the composition. The saint holds an open book in his left hand and rests his lower-arm on a rock. With his right arm he wards off the devil, in the shape of an old lady with a nude upper-body, dressed in light red with bizarre, yellow headgear, who grabs his shoulder and pulls his cloak in order to draw his attention to naked, young woman. She is holding a gold chalice with a lid in her left hand. She wears a string with a gold pendant around her neck and her head is adorned with a little cap. The panel to the left: the donor, kneeled on the foreground, dressed in long sleeved garments and a loose cloak. Saint Anthony stands behind him, with the boar, his cloak draped over a blue-green undergarment. The panel to the right: the other donor, kneeled in the foreground, with a prayer book in her hands. She wears a cloak, laced with black and white fur, with wide sleeves, and around her face she wears a white cap, which hangs over her shoulders. A bishop stands behind her. He holds the staff in a gloved hand. The cope is embroidered with gold, and decorated with pearls and jewels. It is held together by a pectorale. He is wearing a mitre, which is also decorated with jewels. Both side panels contain a mountainous landscape. |
