Summary[edit]

Description

This photo shows PC Mat Evans collecting an award for his bravery when protecting a man from 60 youths.

PC Matthew Evans, who was confronted by a group of around 60 youths during a protest in Birmingham city centre. Armed with sticks, the youths charged forward but the officer stood his ground and tried to protect passers-by from the mob. Unfortunately, a young man suffered head injuries but PC Evans fought his way through the group to reach the victim and prevented any further attacks.

West Midlands Police is joining forces with the Birmingham Mail newspaper to launch a ‘Police Hero of the Year’ award, a brand new category set up to recognise the heroic actions and bravery many officers and staff display on a daily basis.

Members of the public are being encouraged to support the force by nominating a local officer or police community support officer (PCSO) who stands out from the crowd.

To nominate your ‘Police Hero of the Year’ please see the application form on the force’s website – www.west-midlands.police.uk, complete the application form in the Birmingham Mail or send a brief email (no more than 200 words) giving details to claire.roberts@trinitymirror.com using the words LOCAL HEROES as your subject line.

Please include details of where the individual is based and contact numbers for you and your nominee.

Award winners will be invited to a special awards ceremony in November.
