Description
With this work Sickert began to introduce clothe male figures into his paintings of female nudes. The addition creates an unsettling and uncertain narrative, prompting speculation as to the identity of the figures. Perhaps there are a dissolute husband and wife, or, more shockingly for comtemporary viewers, a protitude and client. The sensational 1907 "Camden Town Murder" of a local prostitute was still in the popular consciousness of the time and gave added potency to Sickert's choice of subject matter.
