Description Dave Smith, research ecologist from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Miss., surgically implants an acoustic tag into a 1-year-old steelhead trout March 25, 2013, at the Coleman National Fish Hatchery in Anderson, Calif. Smith is using the fish-tag data obtained for use in a computer model that helps evaluate habitat restoration work under the Sacramento River Bank Protection Project, a joint flood risk reduction effort between the district and the state's California Central Valley Flood Protection Board to repair riverbank erosion along the Sacramento River and its tributaries.
