Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Daniel W. Allen House, 812 Auburn Avenue at Melbourne Place, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Built in 1894, here we are presented with a design that applies subtle but unmistakable Colonial Revival detailing to an unusual layout. The windows and doors are where you'll find all the pizzazz: the front entrance is framed by a pair of Doric pilaster strips supporting a snazzy entablature, while a broken pediment crowns the attic window, echoing the broken pediment suggested by the gable returns on either side. This contrasts with a round-arched, shutter-framed attic window on the lateral elevation facing Melbourne Place. In the corners between the cross-gables are a pair of enclosed corner wings with balconies above, the windows of which are rectangular but are topped with decorative keystones nonetheless. Original owner Daniel Williams Allen (1856-1909) was the senior partner in the law firm of Allen & Butterfield; he lived in the house until his death.
