Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Daniel & Elizabeth Donovan House, 85 Harvard Place, Buffalo, New York, October 2021. Although built in 1907 past the peak of the style's popularity, the design of this two-and-a-half-story residence hearkens back to earlier iterations of the Queen Anne style of architecture, eschewing wood-frame construction for brick and cement blocks on the exterior, and featuring a steeply-pitched hipped roof rather than an enormous front gable. But many other signature elements are plainly to be seen: the façade is asymmetrical, with a bowed bay window (complete with original leaded glass) placed to the left of a half-width front porch wherein a recessed front entrance is covered by a shallow segmental arch supported by Doric pilasters. And, of course, a two-story conical-roofed turret stands sentinel on the southwest corner of the building. Daniel Donovan (born 1858) was a self-employed interior decorator who specialized in painting wall hanging, wallpaper design, and wood finishing. He and his wife Elizabeth lived in the house until 1920.
