Forbes était un officier de la marine britannique qui, en 1849-50, a effectué deux missions à la cour du Roi du Dahomey pour tenter en vain de le convaincre de mettre fin à la traite des esclaves. Le Dahomey était un royaume guerrier qui a surgi vraisemblablement au cours du second quart du 17ème siècle, et parvint à dominer ses voisins grâce à son armée, composée d'hommes et de femmes et fondée sur une stricte discipline militaire. Cet ouvrage en deux volumes reprend le journal de Forbes et un récit de ses entretiens avec le Roi Gezo. Il comprend une description des coutumes et la culture du pays et des annexes contenant des vocabulaires des langues Vahie et Dahoman.

Forbes was a British naval officer who, in 1849-50, undertook two missions to the court of the King of Dahomey in an unsuccessful attempt to convince him to end involvement in the slave trade. Dahomey was a warlike kingdom that arose most likely in the second quarter of the 17th century and came to dominate its neighbors through its army, which included both men and women and was based on strict military discipline. This two-volume work reproduces Forbes’ journal and his account of his conversations with King Gezo. It includes descriptions of the customs and culture of the country and appendices containing vocabularies of the Vahie and Dahoman languages.
