Summary[edit]

Description

"Meeting of the Daffydil Athletic Club", a 1906 charcoal drawing by George Bellows. On display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

Large, rowdy street gangs of youth were common at the beginning of the 20th century, and many social reformers promoted athletic clubs as a healthy, moral alternative. Bellows satirizes the movement not only in the name of the club, but the violent nature of the play.
