Summary[edit]

Description

Detail of one of the lions.

At the real Dabotap, the lions would have been placed at the top of each of the four staircases, rather than at the corners as seen at this replica. Today, the real Dabotap has only one lion remaining, on the western staircase; a second lion is in London at the British Museum, and the other two are unaccounted for.

The real Dabotap is designated as a National Treasure (No. 20), denoting Korean artistic achievement of the highest merit. It also adorns the 10-won coin.

(A popular Christian urban legend used to say that the lion on the 10-won coin Dabotap was morphed into a Buddha, in order to force every South Korean to carry a Buddha on him/her at all times, and to help spiritually favor Buddhist candidates for the Presidency over Christian candidates. This urban legend was popular when Buddhists tended to be authoritarians, such as Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, while Christians tended to be democratic, such as Kim Young-sam or Kim Dae-jung - a trend that has largely reversed since then.)
