The discovery of gold on a tributary creek of the Klondike River in 1896 sparked an epic gold rush. Beginning the following spring, thousands of people from the four corners of the Earth, but mainly from the United States and Canada, poured into the Yukon in the hope of striking it rich.

These northern gold fields were remote and difficult to reach. Under the circumstances, Canadian authorities required all gold seekers making for the Klondike haul in enough supplies to survive a year in the wilderness. A year’s worth of supplies was estimated as a ton of goods, often with no other mode of transport than men’s backs.

It is estimated that only about 4,000 prospectors hit pay dirt. In boom-town Dawson City, at the junction of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers, these lucky souls could pay for their purchases with gold dust. The undying legend of the Yukon gold hunter was born.

This mosaiculture artwork was developed with the collaboration with the City of Whitehorse, Yukon.
