Description
English: Reactions with Magnesium(II)-nitrate. From left to right:

With NaOH: Mg2+ + 2OH- -> Mg(OH)2(s) (insoluble in surplus)

With NH3: Mg(NO3)2 + 2NH3 + 2H2O -> Mg(OH)2 + 2NH4+ Mg(OH)2 + 2NH4+ + 4H2O <-> [Mg(H2O)6]2+ + 2NH3; [Mg(H2O)6]2+ + NH3 -> [Mg(H2O)5(NH3)]2+ + H2O (In surplus this will form a soluble complex. In the glass you see the clear Mg(NO3)2 solution below, above NH3 was dropped in; in the middle where the two phases meet you see a ring of Mg(OH)2.)

With Na2CO3: Mg2+ + (CO3)2- -> MgCO3(s); Mg2+ + 2OH- -> Mg(OH)2(s) (Both reactions will occur as soda is acting alkaline in water. The end product is a white mix of Mg(OH)2 and MgCO3.
