Summary[edit]

Description
English: Reactions with Cobalt (II) nitrate. From left to right:

Pure solution of Cobalt (II) nitrate. It is a very pale pink solution.

With (NH4)2S: Co2+ + S2- -> CoS(s) (The black solid is first soluble in acid, but will react over Co(OH)S to Co2S3 when on air. This product is persistent to acid.)

With NaOH: Co2+ + OH- -> (in cold:) blue alkaline salts of varying composition; (in hot or in NaOH surplus:) Co(OH)2 (rose red to brownish; this is the more stable form)

With Na2CO3: Co2+ + (CO3)2- -> blue carbonate salts of varying composition (Will become that brown Co(OH)2 in surplus, too.)
