Notes

Probably written at Utrecht. Initials in red and blue, some with penwork. Binding of oak boards covered with brown leather. Each cover is divided by diagonal three-line fillets into twenty-four compartments, twelve of lozenge shape, the remainder forming segments of lozenges. The lozenges contain four impressions of each of the following stamps: pelican in her piety (rectangular), swan with star (circular), quatrefoil (Iozenge-sahaped). These stamps are reproduced by A. Hulshof and M. J. Schretlen, De Kunst der oude Boekbinders, 1921, pl. iii, nos. 3, 10, 11, and appear on books bound by the Brothers of the Common Life (or of St. Jerome) at Utrecht. The segments of lozenges bear impressions of two stamps: a heart transfixed by two arrows in saltire, surmounted by a star (circular), and a fleur-de-lys (lozenge- shaped). According to the South Kensington Catalogue of Book- bindings, 1894, pp. 168, 169, the two stamps occur commonly on books belonging to the Augustinian Priory at Utrecht; they are reproduced by Hulshof and Schretlen, op. cit., pl. i, nos. 4, 8. The

evidence afforded by the occurrence of the various stamps on books at Utrecht suggests that the binding dates from the last quarter of the 15th century. Remains of two brass clasps catching on to the Upper cover. Belonged to the Priory of Our Lady and the Holy Apostles at Utrecht; see the inscription, 16th cent., "Ad Regulares Ultraiectinos" on f. 372 b.
