Description
Deutsch: Wappen der ehemaligen Bürgermeisterei Überruhr, seit 1929 Stadtteil von Essen:
„In Grün ein silberner (weißer) gestürzter Wellensparren dazwischen in Rot ein silberner (weißer) Kreuzschargen oder Sonnenrad mit schwarzem Auge.“

Das Wappen wurde von Kurt Schweder entworfen und hatte nie offiziellen Charakter. Ende der 1980er Jahre schuf der Heraldiker für alle Essener Stadtteile Wappen. Sie sind inzwischen von der Essener Bevölkerung gut angenommen worden.

Das Wappen ist ein sogenanntes "redendes Wappen"; in Urkunden des Stiftes Rellinghausen wurden die Bauernschaften Hinsel und Holthausen schon früh als "Over Rore" und "Overruhr" genannt. Das Wappen deutet in Form des Wellensparrens darauf hin. Der Kreuzschargen ist ein heraldisches Sonnensymbol; ein glücksbringendes und unheilabwehrendes germanisches Zeichen als Hinweis auf die zahlreichen gemanischen Bodenfunde.

English: „Vert, between a chevron inverted wavy Argent, gules a sunwheel Argent with a black eye.“

The arms were drawn by Kurt Schweder who designed coats of arms for all districts of Essen in die 1980s; they were never official used, but meanwhile recognized by the citizens of Essen and its districts.

The arms is canting; "Over Rore" or "Overruhr" means "village on the other side of the Ruhr river"; the municipality lays on an oxbow towards the powerful chapter of Rellinghausen, where it belonged to. The sunwheel symbolises the germanical archaeological finds in the area.
