Object history | Das Stadtwappen zeigt den Ostturm der Altöttinger Gnadenkapelle ohne die spätgotischen Anbauten und mit der Madonna mit dem Kind im offenen Tor. Das älteste Hauptsiegel von Neuötting ist mit dem Stadtrecht von 1321 überliefert. Es wurde wohl schon früher gefertigt, denn Ötting hatte schon im 13. Jahrhundert Stadtstatus und war wichtiger Handelsplatz am Inn. In späteren Siegeln wird die Kapelle verschiedentlich rund oder achteckig wiedergegeben, in Wappenabbildungen seit 1523 durch ein weißes Zelt ersetzt. In den Stadtsiegeln von 1374 bis 1633 fehlt Maria mit dem Kind. Die Feldfarbe war ursprünglich Rot und wurde im 19. Jahrhundert durch Blau verdrängt. Die Tatsache, dass sich das Wahrzeichen von Altötting, der älteren Siedlung, im Wappen von Neuötting findet, führte zu manchen Verwechslungen. Das als Belohnung für den Einsatz des Bürgermilitärs 1809 verliehene Wappen, eine goldene Königskrone im Rautenschild, wurde nicht ausdrücklich als Stadtwappen vergeben und fand als solches auch keine Verwendung. | ||||
