Object history
Deutsch: Die Wappenfiguren erschienen bereits im ältesten, von 1386 bis 1450 nachweisbaren Siegelbild. Die Lilie darf wohl - wie im Freiburger Stadtsiegel - als Zeichen des Gerichtsbannes und somit als Hinweis auf das auch für mehrere Dörfer zuständig gewesene Stadtgericht verstanden werden. Der vordere kleine Schild zeigt das Wappen der Grafen von Rieneck, der ursprünglichen Stadtherren, das zeitweilig durch das ihrer Nachfolger, der Landgrafen von Leuchtenberg, ersetzt war. Seit 1950 erscheint an dieser Stelle wieder das rienecksche Wappen. Der hintere, wohl als eigentliches heraldisches Zeichen der Stadt zu deutende kleine Schild mit dem Pfahl ist in den leuchtenbergischen Farben tingiert. Von ihm ist die dreibahnige Stadtflagge abgeleitet.
