Object history
Deutsch: Ursprung und Bedeutung des als Wappentier verwendeten Löwen sind ungewiss. Der älteste Nachweis findet sich auf einem Siegelabdruck von 1304. Seit Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts führte Bonndorf in den Siegeln drei bewurzelte oder auf einem Dreiberg stehende Bohnenstengel. Die Pflanzen sollen den Ortsnamen symbolisieren, der jedoch nicht von der Bohne, sondern wohl vom mittelhochdeutschen bôm/bôn (= Baum) herzuleiten ist. Im 19. Jahrhundert trat in den Siegeln über dem Bohnenstengel-Wappen ein mit einem Rutenbündel schräggekreuzter Anker hinzu. Nach der Stadterhebung 1891 führte Bonndorf seit 1894 wieder den Löwen im Wappen, dessen Tingierung das Generallandesarchiv 1895 etwas gesucht nach den Farben des Wappens der Herren von Krenkingen bestimmte. Elisabeth von Krenkingen hatte mit Gemahl und Sohn 1402 das Paulinerkloster in Bonndorf gestiftet.
