Summary[edit]

Description
English: D. P. Dearborn, his kepi badge is "3," and we speculate he later transferred to the 4th. His collar insignia is N.H.V.

Civil war letter: Headquarters of Detach. 4th Regt. N.H.V., Beaufort, (SC) June 16/62 Dear Aunt, I was very thankful to receive a letter though very brief from you, but it arrived at a time when I was unable to write a word. Flora tells me that it was one time rumored that I was dead, but I have the pleasure of stating that such is not the fact of the case. What sad news we have of our friend Charley, but I cannot say that it was unexpected to me as I have been looking for it for a long time knowing his courage and daring, fearless as one of the old French Guard. But as he has gone to be no more with us we must love each other all the more, there is now another tie to bind us together in this world. Our friends are leaving us and passing away, so we shall yet leave the scene of our active labors. I have been Act. Assist. Surgeon to a Detachment of our Regt. We were at James Island but now are here by the order of Gen. Hunter. I now have charge of a detachment of the 8th Mich. and the entire Regimental Hospital so you may well conclude that I have enough to attend to. The Maj., Adjutant and I all room together in the same house. By the way Maj. Drew says he is some connection of mine, his mother being a Dearborn. Perhaps you know something in regard to the matter. Susan writes me that you are all going to remain with Aunt Ann this Summer. You need rest and should take the time now. Please write often and let me know how you are. I have no more time to write tonight as it is late and I am very tired. Love to all yourself and particular. Yours Truly, D. P. Dearborn [Ed. Note: On the reverse of this letter , upside down and in different handwriting is the following: "Ac. Alcohol - 2 oz. Sect. (?) Ether - 6 oz. Tinc. Opium - 1/2 oz. !

Oil Lavender - 1 oz."]
