Este día tiene su origen en la lucha de las mujeres por sus derechos laborales, políticos y sociales, y se remonta al siglo XIX. En 1910, la Conferencia Internacional de Mujeres Socialistas declaró el 8 de marzo como el Día Internacional de la Mujer, en homenaje a las trabajadoras que habían sido víctimas de una trágica fábrica textil en Nueva York en 1908.
