Judicious plantingmay relieve the angularity of foundations and round offthe corners of the yard. Fig. 2325. Individual speci-mens may be used freely, but only rarely should theybe wholly isolated or scattered. They should be plantedsomewhere near the borders, that they may not inter-fere with the continuity of the place and that they mayhave background to set them off. The background maybe a building, a bank, or a mass of foliage. In mostplaces, the mass or border-planting should be the ruleand the isolated specimen the exception; but, unfortu-nately, this rule is usually reversed. SHRUBBERY SHRUBBERY 1665 ally has a number of stems springing from the groundand a tree usually has a single trunk, but this is notuniformly true in either case. The chief value of shrubbery comes from its use inan artistic way, although some shrubs have ediblefruits. Many shrubs, svxch as lilacs, some of the spi-reas, gooseberries and currants, produce leaves veryearly in the season and some, like Forsythia, Daphne,and the Juneberry are covered with a profusion of blos-soms at this time. Prom eai-ly spring until Novemberin temperate latitudes leaves and flowers are to be foundon deciduous shrubs, and from June until the followingspring ornamental fruits can be seen on their branches,the red berries of the elder beginning and barberriesending the list. Some of these fruits are so richlycolored and so abundant that they can be seen from along distance. Many shrubs, like some of the vibur-nums and dogwoods, attain a height of 10 or 15 feet,while others, like bunchberry and Daphne Cneoru
