That Charity Schoolproved to be the germ of one that ten years later grew into a complete literaryinstitution, and which is now devoted exclusively to the benefit of the sons ofWesleyan ministers. In 181.1 a similar school was established at WoodhouseGrove, near Leeds. John Wesley also established schools for poor children atNewcastle and London, made regulations for their government, and collectedand contributed funds for their support. It now has three colleges for the education of ministers, fourschools especially for ministers children, two colleges in which young men arefitted for commercial and professional life, and two Normal schools for thetraining of teachers. It also has 853 day or parochial schools or departments,with an attendance of 67,152 boys, 52,517 girls, and 59,332 infants, being atotal of 179,001 day scholars. Its educational provisions are equal in extentto that of any other Protestant body in Great Britain. In the United States the Methodist people both North and South havedevised liberal things for the education of their sons and daughters. As earlyas the year 1780, Asbury and Dickens prepared a plan for a Seminary andobtained subscriptions.
