Title
English: Cutting oats on Engbretsen farm near Norman, Washington, ca. 1907
Description
English:

In the early 1900s, farmers grew oats on the rich river bottom land in Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom Counties. Preparing the land was hard work. Usually, trees had to be cut and the stumps pulled out. Some low-lying land had to be diked and drained to make it dry enough for planting. This photo, taken around 1907, shows Andrew Prestlein (left), Joesph Prestlein (middle), and Cornelius Engebretsen (right) harvesting oats on the Engebretsen farm near Norman, Washington. These are just a few of the many Norwegian-American farmers who settled in western Washington State beginning in the 1880s.
