Summary[edit]

Description

Current lineations (left) & swash lines (center & right) on aragonite sand beach in the Bahamas.

Swash lines are sedimentary structures in sandy beach facies that consist of irregularly curvilinear, thin ridges of sediment, sometimes mixed with organic debris, and often slightly coarser-grained than surrounding sediments. The lines mark the maximum landward extent of water from individual waves washing ashore.

Current lineations, also called rill lineations and parting lineations, are sedimentary structures consisting of shallow grooves and ridges oriented essentially perpendicular to shoreline and parallel to the back-and-forth swash movement of waves. Current lineations form during a wave’s backwash phase.

Orientation: seaward is left; landward is right

Locality: swash zone, beach along the southeastern side of Graham's Harbour, just north of the Bahamas Field Station, northeastern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas
