English: A mounted penguin skin from the Crozier Collection of the Belfast Natural History Society.
In November 1843 John Cassidy, then curator in the Belfast Museum, obtained 150 specimens of Southern Ocean birds, from the "Crozier expedition", including the remains of two immature 'great penguins'. This survivor is a putative paratype of the Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri Gray, 1844, and is so labelled in the Belfast Museum. Crozier In 1839, Crozier joined James Clark Ross on the Ross expedition, as second-in-command of a four-year voyage to explore the Antarctic continent in the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. Crozier commanded Terror, and was appointed to the rank of captain in 1841. |
