The Schloss where the Princes lived was alarge, bright, pleasant country-house standing inpretty but not large grounds, bordered by forest,on the edge of the beautiful Ploener See. Fromthe neighbouring Kadetten-Schule, where the boysundergo a semi-military training, four to six cadetswere chosen to share the lessons and amusementsof the Princes, always returning to the Schule tosleep. Ploen is a very small, primitive town, so smallthat I made the mistake of calling it a village and was severely reprimanded by Prince Joachimfor my blunder. It had just one long stragglingstreet, with a few shops, and at the end close tothe lake stood the Kadetten Schule, which hadformerly been the residence of the old DanishKings, some of whose bodies lay in the crypt ofthe little chapel adjoiningâ
