Summary[edit]

Description

A group of female carpenters, attached to Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps, posing for the camera. Although they are not wearing a uniform, all of the women are wearing a protective coat or pinafore over their clothing. Some are holding tools or equipment, and they are all standing in a large yard piled high with lumber. In the background a large wooden shed, possibly a workshop, is visible.

World War I was the first war to be covered by officially appointed photographers. Around 40,000 official photographs were taken between 1916, when the first official photographers were sent out, and 1918. Over half of these were taken at the Western Front.
