Summary[edit]

Description

A "war cross" or "Cross of Sacrifice". Designed by Reginald Blomfield, every Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Europe has one of these.

A tradition Christian cross reflects the (default) religion of the majority of the boys buried next to it; and iron sword is superimposed on the cross as a reminder of the military nature of the duty done.

Blomfield designed the cross in four sizes, from 14ft to 30ft. A different size is used roughly according to the number of burials and the size of the site in question - the larger the cemetery, the larger the cross.
