Fourth.—Closely allied is the so-called Jump shot (see lastcut), i. e., making your own ball pass over another ball orover one or more arches, causing it to hit another, otherwise im-possible to be captured. THE WICKETS, OR ARCHES.For beginners narrow arches would destroy interest and dis-courage effort. At the start the arches should be at least 4inches, and these can be replaced by more difficult ones as expert-ness in play increases. The wire should be at least one halfinch in thickness, and to secure firmness should be driven intothe ground at least ten inches, leaving tops about ten incheshigh. If blocks should be used it would mean, of course, greaterfixedness. If tops are square they can be driven more readilyinto the earth. If no blocks are used changes in setting out thegame are easily made, as the lawn becomes worn in some placesby excessive use. THE BALLS.The balls may be of wood, but those of hard rubber are themost satisfactory. Though costing much more at the outset.
