Frosting "Circus" of Activity He does his own frost work wijth one assistant and he saiys this is real- ly a "circus" of activity. A frost night is not long enough for him to get ifrom one end of his territoiry to the ottier. Inlcidentally, he wanted it ibrouigiht out that he is very appreciative of the frost warnling program as emanina- ting from Cranberry Experiment Sta- tion under the supervision of George Rounsvd'lle of the Station Staff. He finds iGecirge extremely cooperative in giving out additional information land advice concerning what to do. "I (bother him plenty," he says. Fourteen Western Pickers He has seven Western picking ma- Chines at the Sbuthers Marsh and no less than 14 in all. I find these keep the vines down, they prune and do increase production. An old bog is apt to get snarled up with runners, but by us:,n;g Westerns I now have bogs diown to mostly uprig'hts." He has a tractor with mower at- tachment in front, a low-gallonage sprayer desaigned ?nd built by Tony IBriggs and several truicks. At one time screening and paicking was done at the iSouthers /Marsh but now all berries go to Ocean Spray. He says a cranberry bog must have goad drainage and on this he is con- stantly working. "For my own re- quirements, at least," he says, "a bog should have sprinkler systems and there should be a locnsastaint fertiliza- tion program. He puts on 100 pounds of 8-16-8 to the acre. TMs he appUes when in (full blaoim and again after harvest in late October or early Novetaber. This he says is really only a mere "dust- ing," but it seems to him to work out to his needed requirements. While be has the low-gallonage sprayer most of his spray work is dane from the air. This service he gets from Marshfield Airways, Inc., of Marshfield, Mass. That his system of adequate dradn- aige, sprinkling as much as posslible and fertilizing consistently, is pay- ing df for him seems to be po-oven by the production he is now beginning to achieve. He insists his bogs be run as dry as possible and that they sho^ijld no' be saturated with too much water. Bill lives at Forges Green, Ply- mou'h with his wife, the former Mar- tha Brooks of Giardner and their three children, Martha 19; Williiam 3rd, 11 and Pe.er, 9. He was bom in Eo=;ion, Ma'^.sachuseMs, March 20, l£i24 but spent his ichildhiood in Gardner and attended elementary schools there. He was graduated from St. Paul preparatory school in Concord, New Hampshire. While in the army he attended Yale University taking a course in engineering. He is a member of the Plymouth Finance Committee, a direiotor of Plymouth County Farm Bureau. He bellongs to Cape Cod Cranberry Grow- ers' Association and to the South IShore Cranberry CluJb, meetinig at Kingston of which he was secretary- treasurer for several years. He be- longs to no other organization, as he says, having no time available. His hobby lis duck shooting at Ply- mouth and in Barnstable in season. In 1949 he was an inspector for the late New England Crainlberry Sales Company, which added to his all- around experience in the cranberry business. EUROPEAN CHERRY PROMOTION The newly-formed, non-profit Red Cherry Export Corporation has be- gun its campaign to market U.S. red, tart cherries in Europe. The backbone of the program is to pro- vide samples for large European buyers land supply information on prices, tariffs and transportation. (American Fruit Grower).
