Summary[edit]

Description

Marietta, Ga., Dec. 7, 2013 –Col. Levan Gamkrelidze, the Country of Georgia’s National Guard commander visited Clay National Guard Center and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) to discuss the Georgia State Partnership Program. With the election of a new President and new Prime Minister, the roles and responsibilities of the Country of Georgia’s National Guard have changed.

“As a new director it was perfect timing and a great opportunity to meet with the commander.” Said, Maj. Jason Ellington, State Partnership Program Director. “We gained a better understanding of his needs so that we can plan future events that will meet not only his needs, but also the needs of the Ministry of Defense.”

Col. Gamkrelidze’s visit to the United States was part of the continuing planning of Fiscal Year 15s future events and training plans. Major General Jim Butterworth, Georgia’s Adjutant General, visited the Country of Georgia in September to discuss maintaining mission capabilities as well as efforts to build and grow the program.

At GEMA, Col. Gamkrelidze was briefed on how the State Operations Center reacts in the event of an emergency, so that they can be better prepared for their new roles. The Col. was able to see how GEMA, DOD and local First Responders are all integrated in the process to handle several different emergencies.

During his visit to CNGC, Col. Gamkrelidze also met with Col. Thomas Blackstock, Chief, Joint Staff, along with additional members of the Joint Staff, to discuss ways of continuing to shape the program as well as strengthening the bonds between the two countries.

“The Georgia National Guard has a long productive partnership with our friends in the Country of Georgia. We look forward to many opportunities to learn from and share our experience with our partners.” said Col. Blackstock. “As we continue to train together, we know the partnership will only grow stronger.”
