Summary
[edit]DescriptionCottage at Taobh a' Chaolais - geograph.org.uk - 1353818.jpg |
English: Cottage at Taobh a' Chaolais. This cottage is one of many that have been/are being built in the Western Isles in a continuing programme of improving living standards - the pile of stones to the left is all that remains of the 'black house' which was the previous accommodation on this site. The old houses are more visually appealing - but they were damp and unsanitary and fostered the prevalence of disease such as tuberculosis. Government grants in the late 1920s/early 1930s encouraged the first wave of rebuilding; in the 1950s there was a more concerted effort to finally move the population out of the black houses; some have been fully renovated and modernized and can be rented as holiday-homes, but most stand in varying stages of decay next to their modern replacements.
