Description

Cortinarius esculentus Lebed.

Image location: Karkaraly National Park, Karaganda District, Kazakhstan

Cortinarius esculentus Lebed., Cortinariaceae, Agaricales. This kind often has Boletus edulis image (except gills). Local name: Паутинник съедобный или Толстушка. Cap: 4-10cm wide when adult (rarely up to 15cm when very old) convex, margins curved under, sometimes up to almost flat when very old; color from light brownish-yellow up to yellow-brown or pale orange-brown; smooth; reddish remnants of hairy veil possible along margin, sometimes a cap spotty. Flesh is white up to some pinkish when old. Gills: attached, close, moderately broad with short and very short intermediate gills; whitish, light pink or light cream up to pink or yellowish-pink up to brownish-pink when old. Odor is weak and pleasant. Stalk: 4-12cm long, white 2-3.5cm thick, enlarged down up to indistinct bulbous base; reddish-orange hairy remnants of veil irregular, evanescent or very weak. Veil: partial veil as reddish-white cotton at young mushroom. Edibility: tasty as King Bolete. Habitat: rather rare kind in average, single, minor small group in pine-tree forest with rare birches, but common in rainy summer. July – August.
