Cortinarius alboluteus Lebeuf, Andre Paul, Liimat., Niskanen, & Ammirati Image location: Nehantic State Forest, Lyme, Connecticut, USA Very common Dermocybe at the edge of mossy swamps in mixed woods in the northeast. This mushroom is illustrated and described in Bessette, Fischer Mushrooms of Northeastern North America. It has a slightly scaly yellow cap darker over the disc, the gills are pale yellowish and broad turning rusty ochre and at maturity they have a big belly. There are two sets of “short gills” arranged symmetrically. The stipe is pale cream colored with yellow fibrils. This mushroom is NOT, IMHO, Peck’s C. luteus…not really close. Peck describes a mushroom with a stipe that is “thick, stout, solid”. This mushroom is none of those. I’ve collected this for 15 years and the stipe is narrow (less than 1 cm), it is not stout it’s equal and it is definitely not solid…it’s hollow. So lacking a better name I still call it Cortinarius luteus. Noah and a few other people are aware of these incongruities but what to do about it? Recognized by sight
