Title
Copper alloy mount or finial in the form of a standing lion of uncertain date, possible medieval to post-medieval
Description
English: A medieval or post-medieval zoomorphic copper alloy mount, possibly a finial (from a vessel, casket or staff) or handle. It consists of the solid, moulded form of a standing lion on a flat pedestal base. Extending beneath this base is an integral circular shaft or pin that appears to have broken off. It is unclear from the angle of the surviving shaft if this was slightly curved, or if the curve has been caused by the break. This suggests that the object was previously attached to a larger item. The lion in standing with his tail curled up over his back. His head is turned to look over the right shoulder. The features of the face have been crudely picked out in the moulding and there has been some attempt to mark out detail on the mane. The base measures 19.4mm x 13.8mm and is 14.6mm high, and tapers to 12.3mm x 10.9mm. The shaft or pin is 6.2mm in diameter. The object has a dark green/brown patina with some pitting on the tail and the back left leg.

Height: 46.3mm; width: 34.5mm; depth: 15.2mm; weight: 46.71g.
