Title
Copper alloy medieval heraldic horse harness pendant
Description
English: Cast copper alloy medieval horse harness pendant. The pendant is shield shaped and flat in section. It is worn and abraded but much decoration survives to the front of the pendant. The design shows a red enamel background with a diagonal band showing exposed copper alloy but which was once filled with gold, as some flecks survive. In each half of the shields are three pattée crosses, which were once in filled with a coloured material. In heraldic terms this reads as ‘Gules a bend or between six crosses pattée or/argent’ as it could be suggested that the tincture should be either silver or gold (or or argent) because in heraldry a ‘colour’ (blue, red, green etc) can’t go on top of another colour – only a ‘metal’ (silver or gold).

The reverse of the pendant is plain. To the top of the pendant is the transverse suspension loop now filled with corrosion product. The pendant is worn and none of the original metal surface survives. Exposed surfaces are dark brown. The pendant is 32.7mm long, of which 8.22mm is the suspension loop. It is 20.4mm wide, 2.14mm thick and weighs 5.29g. It is 14th century in date.

Steven Ashley also reports that whether the crosses are silver or gold, these arms appear to be unknown. This isn’t uncommon for medieval arms, many of which don’t survive to pass into the post-medieval reference books.
