Title
Copper alloy medieval buckle plate with fantastical beast c.1300-1400
Description
English: One half of a folded copper alloy medieval buckle plate dating to c. 1300-1400. The plate is rectangular in plan and is narrowed at one end to fit the strap bar of the buckle with a central notch cut out to accommodate the pin. The plate has broken across the two folded arms that would have enclosed the strap bar; the other side of the plate is missing.

The front of the plate appears to bear an image of a fantastical beast facing the frame end. The depiction is quite crude but the beast appears to have an oval shaped eye, a double fillet across its neck and marks depicting possible fur or scales. The other end of the frame, is bent over and the part which would have had a rivet is now missing.

Length: 24mm; width: 13.8mm; thickness: 0.7mm; weight: 1.4g.
