Title |
Copper alloy bridle boss with Royal coat of arms |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete Post-Medieval copper alloy bridle boss depicting the arms of the United Kingdom. The boss consists of a domed centre surrounded by thirteen triangular projections (one is missing so there would have been fourteen) surmounted by a fleur de lis. One at the top in the centre is pierced with a 4.62mm diameter hole. The projection directly opposite this is also pierced with a 4.47mm diameter hole. The mount depicts the Royal coat of arms comprising a quartered squared topped shield. The surface of the boss is pitted so the quadrants are now unclear, but they are likely to have had the 3 lions passant guardant (for England) in 1 and 4; the rampant lion (for Scotland) in 2 and the harp (for Ireland) in 3. This is all within the Order of the Garter which is surmounted with a crown and has lion and unicorn supporters.
Although the style of the boss would suggest 17th century, the arms it depicts appear to be the royal arms that were adopted in 1837 with the accession of Queen Victoria. The surface of the object is pitted and corroded; on the reverse there are traces of green paint which would add weight to the argument for a later date for this object. An almost identical example is recorded on the database as WILT-12F905 Length: 61.22mm; width: 57.47mm; thickness: 2.35mm; weight 33.1g |
