Title |
Copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch c. 75-175AD with foliate stud in the head. |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy trumpet brooch of Roman date, c. 75-175AD. The head is a “trumpet-like” form and is broadly D-shaped in section flaring out into a broader, disc shaped head. The head loop is broken but appears to be squared rather than the more usual rounded form. The head is decorated with a foliate stud. At the rear of the large head are semi-cylindrical mouldings to accommodate the axis bar for the pin, which is now missing. The bow is D shaped in section and tapers towards a rounded, mould decorated foot. At the waist of the bow there is acanthus moulding. The catchplate is present and complete but appears to be undecorated. The surface of the brooch is smooth with a dark brown patina.
Length: 85.2mm; width of head: 23.4mm; thickness of bow: 10.1mm; weight: 53.77 |
