Title |
Copper alloy Roman key in form of a lion c.43-410AD |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy zoomorphic terminal, probably a key hand, of Roman date (c. 43-410AD). The handle is complete but the iron key shaft and bit do not survive. The handle takes the form of a crouching lion depicted in the round. The animal is missing its tail, which is replaced by a square collar from which extends the corroded remains of the iron shaft of the key. The socket into which the stem would have fitted takes the form of a 3-peteled flower which covers the lion’s hind legs. The animal’s forelegs are tucked underneath the head and mane. To each side of the head are oval shaped indentations for the ears. There is an incised cross on the snout, presumably intended to represent the nose and whiskers. The lion’s mouth is open. The underside of the object is concave. The side of the lion’s head is damaged which appears to have been caused by expanding corrosion products from the iron shaft of the key. The open mouth appears to have originally been a complete circle, but the damage has caused this to open at the front edge. Presumably this piercing was to enable suspension of the handle and key. The object has a dark green patina. Length: 64.2mm; width: 18.6mm; height: 29.1mm; weight: 85.56g |
