Title
Copper alloy Roman brooch with enamel inlay (75-175AD)
Description
English: A copper alloy dolphin brooch dating c. 75-175AD. The wings are tubular and semi-circular in cross-section with a stop-ridge at either end. The head of the brooch rises up from the wings and tapers downwards forming the bow of the object. The bow is decorated with two parallel grooves containing coloured enamel. The decorative scheme appears to have consisted of alternating yellow and pale blue/green, enamel cells. Between each cell is a smaller empty cell suggesting a possible third colour that has not survived. On the sides of the bow appear to be arcs and dot decoration that may original have also held a coloured enamel. The pin and catchplate are missing. The object has a dark green patina.

Length: 42.2mm; width: 19.3mm; thickness of bow: 4.6mm; weight: 11.19g
