Title
Copper alloy Roman Trumpet brooch with enamel inlay, c.75-175AD
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy trumpet brooch of Hull Type 157C dating to the Roman period (c. 75-175 AD). The brooch is very similar to Hattatt (1989, p. 327, Fig. 186, no. 1528). The head expands outward in a typical 'trumpet-like' form with a broadly D-shaped cross-section. The bow of the brooch tapers towards a circular foot. At the rear of the head is the top of a pierced lug through which the spring would have passed holding it in place. The spring, pin and catchplate are missing. The head of the brooch is decorated with inlaid enamel. There are two semi-circular cells containing blue enamel, and four triangular cells - two with blue enamel and two with yellow enamel. The areas between these cells may also have been enamelled originally. At the waist there is an acanthus moulding. The bow itself has a moulded 'zig-zag' band running from the central moulding to the foot. The foot also appears to have an acathus form.

Length: 53.99mm; width: 15.98mm; thickness of bow: 6.43mmWeight: 18.7g
