Title
Copper alloy Medieval horse harness pendant
Description
English: Cast copper alloy Medieval horse harness pendant. The pendant is shield shaped and flat in section. It is worn and abraded but some decoration survives to the front of the pendant. The design shows the filed of the shield divided vertically into two halves (or per pale). The left field has the remains of red (gules) enamel in which are the outlines of three lions rampant (as on the arms of England) which may have once been enamelled or gilded. The right filed is much abraded and no discernible design remains, though there are flecks of gilt. The reverse of the pendant is plain, To the top of the pendant is the transverse suspension loop with a circular perforation, now incomplete due to damage. The break edges are worn, suggesting this damage occurred in antiquity. The pendant is worn and none of the original metal surface survives. Exposed surfaces are dark brown with patches of light green to the reverse. The pendant is 40.18mm long, of which 9.62mm is the suspension loop. It is 25.7mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 10.54g. It is 14th century in date.
