Mandado edificar por D. João V em 1711, é o mais sumptuoso convento e monumento barroco português e as peripécias da sua construção inspiraram um dos primeiros sucessos do Nobel das Literatura, José Saramago (Memorial do Convento). É o paradigma do reinado mais rico da história de Portugal, graças ao ouro vindo do Brasil. Foi construído para cumprir a promessa do rei caso tivesse um descendente para ocupar o trono. Reconhece-se alguma inspiração do castelhano convento do Escurial, numa articulação harmoniosa de três componentes distintas: palácio real, convento e igreja. O projecto original é de João Frederico Ludovice, também autor da basílica da Estrela, em Lisboa. O convento foi ocupado pelos Franciscanos que desenvolveram a farmácia e a enfermaria, enquanto que os outros ocupantes deste convento, os Dominicanos desenvolveram a biblioteca. Parte das instalações está ocupada pela Escola Prática de Infantaria, sendo possível visitar, a pedido, esta unidade militar e apreciar os monumentais corredores com centenas de metros dedicados às batalhas de Portugal e onde cabe um camião.
