DescriptionControl Data 160-A.jpg |
Control Data 160-A computer. Truly a "desk top" machine. The paper-tape reader and punch is on the right (input and output for the computer) and on the left is a 7-track tape unit that could record at 667 (later 800) bits-per-inch on a 2400 ft long tape. Central memory was 4K of 12-bit words, or effectively 8K characters - so you were doing well if you had a program that could handle 4000-character blocks on tape (half of central memory). This resulted in a block of about 6 inches plus another inch for the inter-block gap. That resulted in a rule of thumb - 4000 blocks of 4000 characters on a reel of tape, so approximately 16 Mbytes in today's terminology |
