applied, after having either the cow-pox or the small-pox. Several months afterwardshe was again inoculated with variolous matter, but no sensible effect wras produced onthe constitution. Here my researches were interrupted till the spring of the year 1798, when, from thewetness of the early part of the season, many of the farmers horses in this neighborhoodwere affected with sore heels, in .consequence of which the cow-pox broke out amongseveral of our dairies, which afforded me an opportunity of making farther observationsupon this curious disease. ♦From the soi e on the hand of Sarah Nelmes.—See the preceding case and the plate. Tm NEW ORLEANS UTJSC? 10 UNION ST t Variolce Vaccinae : Edward Jenner. 21 A mare, the property of a person who keeps a dairy in a neighboring parish, began tohave sore heels the latter end of the month of February, 1798, which were occasionallywashed by the servant men of the farm. Thomas Virgoe, William Wherret and WilliamHaynes, who, in consequence became affected with sores in their hands, followed by in-flamed lymphatic glands in the arms and axilla, shiverings succeeded by heat, lassitudeand general pains in the limbs. A single paroxysm terminated the disease, for withintwenty-four hours they were free from general indisposition, nothing remaining but thesores on their hands.
