Summary

[edit]
Description

The vicinity of Grand Canyon is among the most remote and least developed in the US; this works out very well for stargazing, due to the lack of light pollution that plagues sprawling metropolises like Los Angeles or Phoenix. It also helps that Grand Canyon's rims are dry, high-altitude areas, translating to less air and moisture getting in the way as well.

From the parking area for Yavapai Point after dark, I could photograph the rising Constellation Orion. A 5-second exposure with my 35mm f/1.8 Nikon prime lens was all that I needed. Longer exposures would make the stars streak due to the Earth's rotation. The exposure was still long enough to capture the redness of Betelgeuse and the pinkness of the Orion Nebula.

This attempt at astronomy photography came out better than others.
