Text Appearing Before Image:
ning is employed by a dogs new master, wecannot wonder at the animals inability to work well. The 72 THE COMPLETE WILDFOWLER best wildfowl dogs are only seen in the hands of those whounderstand how to break as well as work their dogs. Wedismiss the point, however, by observing that an average dogis much better than no dog at all, though in the pleasuresof shooting we find nothing to delight us more than a realchampion working dog. Good dogs need every care. Indeed they should have it,because they are worth it. Do not allow anyone to molestyour trained comrade. Remember that he is highly strungand is easily spoilt by interference. I need scarcely add thatattention to the dogs health is an important item relative toits working abilities. If a valuable dog is ailing, a wiseman will solicit the services of a veterinary surgeon at once, but I would advise that the vet. be a canine specialist. Adog failing in health may readily be detected by the dullnessof its eyes and the heat of its nose.
Text Appearing After Image:
■ CHAPTER VIISHORE-SHOOTING Hutting It is my intention to describe the sport of shore-shooting inall its branches, viewed from a practical standpoint, and asapplied to various quarters around our coasts. Each par-ticular shore has generally some characteristic peculiar toitself, which demands the adoption of special methods toobtain successful results. As well as describing thesespecialities and the application of suitable methods, referencewill be made to the various weapons and tools used in this kindof sport. Besides acquainting himself with his gear, theshore-shooter who would excel in his sport must gain aconsiderable knowledge of his quarry and its habits subjectto the various conditions of tide and weather. He must alsolearn much in the art of shore craft. If gifted with powersof mimicry, and thereby able to attract his birds by calling, his chances of good sport over those who are unskilled in thisbranch, are very considerable. I am afraid that it is a pretty general idea amo
